Military Honors for Veterans
The Washington State National Guard is responsible for providing full military honors during funeral services for all honorably discharged veterans. But due to funding and staffing challenges, the National Guard relies on local VFW and American Legion Honor Guard support. The Honor Guard Team consists of members from VFW Post 1040 and American Legion Post 234.
When required, the team performs the flag presentation, firing of the volley and taps. This presentation is done on the 1st Tuesday of each month at the Washelli Cemetery in Seattle and the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Acacia Cemetery also in Seattle.
After the flag folding ceremony, volley and playing of taps, the next of kin is presented with the folded flag as a final tribute along with a small box containing three cartridges from the final volley. Each presentation box also has the specific service emblem for the veteran laid to rest – Army, Marine, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine – on the front of the tribute box.
If you want to become involved with this important tribute to our nation’s veterans or need information for a lost loved one, contact VFW Post 1040 or American Legion Post 234 for assistance.
