4/27/2015

Plan of the Week for April 27th-May 1st.

In addition, I'd like to call attention to a few more items:
  • The new Academic Calendar which will take effect starting Summer Quarter is out.
  • Next weekend, May 1st, 2nd and 3rd, the campus is hosting it's 30th Annual Pow-Wow Celebration.  Veterans hold a special place in Native American Culture, and are invited to march in the Grand Entry each day.  Please see the note in the Plan of the Week, and the attached flyer for more information on days and times.  Last year several Student Veterans joined Veterans from our community in the Grand Entry.  Please consider joining us this year.
  • Many thanks to Bridget Guerrero, Ex-Marine (there are no former Marines) and wife of Security Director Dan Guerrero, for her contribution of a crock pot of the greatest chicken vegetable soup ever last week!  Bridget is also the founder and participant in Valor Run Northwest, as well as our Guest of Honor for the Campus' Second Annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 20th, 10:30 AM at the Blackbox Theater. This event is free to the general public. Please register for reserved seating.

About the Film
In April of 1975, the North Vietnamese Army was closing in on Saigon as South Vietnamese resistance was crumbling. Approximately 5,000 Americans remained, with roughly 24 hours to get out. Their South Vietnamese allies, co-workers, and friends faced certain imprisonment and possible death if they remained behind, yet there was no official evacuation plan in place. Still, over the last days in Vietnam, with the clock ticking and the city under fire, 135,000 South Vietnamese managed to escape. They were helped by a number of heroic Americans who took matters into their own hands, engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations in a desperate effort to save as many people as possible.

Last Days in Vietnam premieres on April 28 at 9pm on KCTS 9.

Seattle ACT Theater: The Ghosts of Tonkin  (02 May - 10 May)
By Steve Lyons; Directed by Mark Kuntz

It will topple the President of the United States.
It will devastate two countries. It will kill two million people.  And one man will try to stop it before it begins.

The powerful, behind-closed-doors story of how seemingly well-intentioned public officials brought about one of the most devastating chapters in the history of the United States: The Vietnam War.  And Oregon Senator Wayne Morse’s battle to stop the war before it began. Play followed by post-play discussion featuring the playwright, Vietnam veterans, and community leaders.

Here is the Plan of the Week for April 20th-24th.  Here's a few more items that wouldn't fit in the plan:

- On April 21st and 22nd, your Veterans Resource Center will be hosting a room at the Campus' Tunnel of Intersections Event.  The purpose of our room will be to bring awareness to the campus on the perspective of student veterans.  Please stop by and visit.  The event will run from 1000-1900 on the 21st, and 1000-1300 on the 22nd.

- Your Student Veterans Association is up and running!  Check the plan of the week next week for the next meeting date and time.

This is Jake Whittenberg, reporter with KING 5 news. We are working on a story to commemorate the upcoming anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. I was wondering if you knew any local vets who were there during that time period that may be willing to speak with me.

Thank you for your help. You have my word we will approach the story with the thoughtfulness and attention it deserves.

Hope to hear from you.
