Today we celebrate the anniversary of July 4th, 1776, when the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from Great Britain through the Declaration of Independence. July 4th was first declared a federal holiday in 1941, but Independence Day celebrations date back to the late 18th century during and after the Revolutionary War. On this day, we celebrate the birth of the nation that would eventually become the United States of America, and the freedom that is such an integral part of our country's values.
